The village is on the Blackwater Valley Scenic Drive. The name is probably a corruption of Eaglais - the Irish name for church.

The graveyard beside the ruin of the transitional church has some headstones dating back to the early 18th century. Between here and Villierstown are Kiltera Ogham Stones.
